  • Notes
    • 1900 Texas Census McCulloch County, Vol 74, ED 108, Sh 2, L 100
Enumerated with Will Lloyd relationship sister-n-law

The following account was supplied by Ruby Mae Hopkins, Granddaughter of Sarah Ann Hatley.

Sometime between 1899 and 1906, Burl Brown and Will Rogers worked together on a cow outfit in and around the Texas Counties of Coleman, Concho and McCullouch. Their wives, Maude Brown and Lena Rogers became friends. (In fact, Maude helped to deliver Lena's 1st baby, or Lena helped to deliver Maude's 1st, I'm not sure). Lena told Maude the following account during that period of time. Lena said that her mother, Sarah Ann Hatley Slay, had run away to the Arizona Territory with a man named Ed Keith. They had taken the three girls with them, but, Frank Slay, Lena's father, had caught up with them before they reached the Texas & New Mexico border. Lena, I believe, remained with her father. (This must have been sometime between 1887 & 1890). Lena later married Will Rogers and after several years they too moved to Arizona.

The Brown family also moved to Arizona about 1910. Maude Brown repeated the story that Lena Slay Rogers had told her, to her own daughter Ivy Mae Brown, who was then a young woman and had become acquainted with and married Roy R. Keith, who was the son of Sarah Ann Hatley & E.G. Keith.
