  • Notes
    • Graveside services for Gaynell Slay Smith Griffith, 91, of Garrison, will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 22, 2019 at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery with Bro. Bobby Smith officiating.

Mrs. Griffith passed away on Friday, April 19, 2019 in Nacogdoches. She was born on December 26, 1927 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Gaynell was born and raised in the Garrison and Holly Springs communities. While in Houston visiting her brother-in-law after he was injured in the war, she met Curtis Smith. The two soon married and made their family complete with the birth of their only child, Susan. They spent the summers visiting some of their favorite places with their little girl making memories together. They enjoyed playing dominoes with friends, fishing and being outside, and they built, owned and managed Trailer Village RV Park on Hwy 59. Sadly, after 36 years of marriage, Gaynell lost Curtis. Gaynell had the ultimate blessing of being a grandmother. Summer and Bradley was the sunshine in her life!! She picked them up at school and never missed the opportunity to stop at Mr. Burt's to get ice cream! When Summer grew up and added John to the group, she found great joy in knowing that Summer was loved and taken care of. As circumstances provided, Gaynell was blessed with a second love of her life. She and Pug Griffith joined their families together and witnessed the happiness that goes along with having two sides together as one. After almost 20 years, she also lost Pug. Gaynell found great joy being surrounded by those she loved. Her little piece of Heaven on earth was where she was happiest and she was grateful that Summer spent 2 years as her secret caregiver, because Gaynell did not think she needed a caregiver! Gaynell was a kind lady who had an superb work ethic. At the park, she picked up limbs, mowed, and raked leaves. She loved cooking for all her family. Her nieces, nephews, and "bonus" children were also very special to her. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church where she found great happiness.

Gaynell is survived by her daughter, Susan Swearingen and husband, Mark of Garrison; granddaughter, Summer Swearingen and partner, John Durrett of Shreveport; nieces, Barbara Corley of Lufkin and Barbara Kruse of Garrison; great nephews, Stephen Corley and wife, Amy and Craig Corley and wife, Marian, Lance Kruse and wife, Dusty and Lane Kruse and wife, Traci; step children, Mike Griffith and wife, Reba of Nacogdoches, Jamie Fain and husband, Ferris of Nacogdoches, Gregg Griffith and wife, Christine of Nacogdoches, and Mark Griffith and wife Becky of Burleson; great nieces and nephews, Claire, Clayton, Cole, Tryton , Johna, Ceale, Maya and Madison.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Curtis L. Smith, second husband, James "Pug" Griffith; grandson, Bradley Lee Swearingen; sister, Marcille Hogan Smallwood; brother, Homer Slay; brothers-in-law, Lonnie Hogan and Larry Smallwood; step-daughters, Glenda Griffith Moore and Mary Lou Griffith; nephews, Wayne Corley and James Henry Kruse.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Willowbrook Nursing Home, Cynthia Dudley, Brenda Bryant, Donna Mooney, Hospice of East Texas, Leah Brahser, RN, Dr. Eddy Furniss and Caron Stark, RN, and Grant Wheeler for their kindness, devotion, and tender care for Gaynell and the entire family.
